Managing Physical Intervention& Breakaway Skills Course for Residential Child Care Staff - 2 Day
Aim:
To provide competent training on managing violence within children's residential care home settings. The course is based on a current risk assessed and training needs analysis for a Children's Services Directorate.
Objectives & Course Content:
At the end of this course staff will be able to identify and understand:
The basic working principals of English Law in relation to the use of physical force, including compliance with the Human Rights Act 1998 and Legislation and guidance with regard to the use of force with regard to Children and young people (including National care Home Minimum Standards).
To look at the increasing risk posed in today's society by 'Edged Weapons'. To define what constitutes an Edged Weapon and to identify the risk posed to staff expected to undertake physical intervention.
The various appropriate and effective technical physical skills required for the purpose of breaking away from a grab or defending oneself or another from a violent physical assault, including understanding relative positioning and the reactionary gap.
To instruct delegates in the various appropriate technical physical skills, including good manual handling and correct posture) required for the competent application of physical intervention and restraint including appropriate methods of restraining, holding still, escorting and containing young people, including dealing with kicking and seated holding / restraint.
To instruct delegates in the risks associated with the use of physical force for the purpose of physical intervention and restraint, paying special attention to the risk of Postural Asphyxiation.
To allow delegates to practice physical restraint in various situational scenarios to expose delegates to increasing levels of pressure to simulate the types of environmental and personal pressures that they may be exposed to and expected to operate in.
Certification:
The programme leading to award of the Certificate of Competence requires;
Attendance of the 2-day course.
Passing of a written examination of competency involving basic law, health and safety, and associated risks.

Due to the current liability associated with this activity and insurance requirements all physical courses require the attendance of two instructors.
