Beware False Prophets -
The Monet & the Kings New Clothes Phenomenon

I recently watched an episode of Hustle on BBC 1 which was a clever re-work of the fairly tale 'The Emperors new clothes'. In the episode they managed to con a woman into believing that the clothes made of sacks were actually the work of a new up-and-coming fashion designer soon to be discovered. In an effort not to look stupid she bought into the story and was conned out of a considerable amount of money.

At the same time the news was running an interesting story about Claude Monet, the father of Impressionist painting, who, according to many art experts, was one of the greatest painters that ever lived and who accredited Monet with creating a new style of painting - Impressionism. As a result of Monet's new style of abstract painting and associated fame many new up-an-coming artists, inspired by the reviews Monet was receiving from many so called 'Art experts' were inspired to paint like him, some going to great lengths to distort what they really saw into a new reality of what possibly existed.

However, recently scientists believe they have discovered the secret behind the work of Claude Monet, and also fellow Impressionist Edgar Degas. They both suffered from severe eye problems that affected their work. In short Monet and Degas couldn't really judge what they was seeing and what they were seeing would have appeared blurred to them. Hence their famous paintings were nothing more than what they actually saw and not possibly an attempt to create an abstract form of art.

 Personal Safety

In the field of personal safety isn't it interesting how the subjective opinion of some self-professed 'experts' lends itself totally to the acceptance of a self-fulfilling prophecy by others who are conned int believing that they are right? I mean they must be right as they must know what they are talking about, right, as they are the trainer, right?

And some people tell me there's no such thing as hypnosis!!

Now before I go any further let me state that an 'expert' needn't necessarily be what we may think and expert is. For example, a senior manager or an experienced member of staff can al be experts in their opinions based on their own experiential perception of what they believe is true. This 'expertise' is then supported by staff who adopt the belief that they cannot do certain things and must do others because an 'expert' has told them so.

Also, let me inform you that you don't need to go to a hypnotist to be hypnotized. Hypnosis is a natural phenomenon that happens many times every day. One of the largest users of hypnosis are advertisers - ever bought anything you didn't really need? Think about it.....

Recently I was delivering a training course when one of the delegates raised a point which illustrates the above points. "Excuse me," he said, "you are talking about the law, but you're not allowed to do that as only Judges are allowed to interpret the law." Interested by the comment I responded by saying "that's very interesting, I didn't know that. How did you come by this information?" His response was as follows: "Well I was on a course last week and that's what the instructor told me." "So does that means it's true?" I asked him. "We'll I suppose so as he must know what he is talking about." I replied by explaining to the man that we all interpret the law every day. Every time we park our car, cross the road, purchase goods from a shop or defend ourselves or physically restrain someone we are interpreting the law, are we not?

If only Judges could do that we would all need our own personal Judge, wouldn't we? The fact was until I re-addressed the issue this intelligent thinking and functioning human being would have believed exactly what he was told simply because the person who gave him the information (albeit wrong information) was viewed by him as someone whom he has placed in a default position of authority over him because the person concerned was a trainer.

Another example which illustrates this is advice given by restraint trainers. Some time ago John Steadman and I were being shown a particular holding technique from a syllabus that had been accredited by a particular agency. The technique involved approaching the subject from the front and then taking hold of the subjects left wrist with your left hand - a seemingly simple exercise. However, to execute this specific technique you had to rotate your left hand so your palm was facing upwards, take hold of the subject just above the wrist (from the front), then step around to the side of the left-hand side of the subject, pivot until you were alongside them and facing in the same direction and then complete the move by brining their arm into what they called a 'figure of 4' position. However to execute the move from a person attempting it would have to put their body and hand in an unnatural position which made the whole technique difficult to do. When we raised our concerns about this we were told "Well that's they way it's done". "Do many people struggle with it?" we asked. "Yes, but it has been devised by people who obviously know what they are talking about. Otherwise it would never have got accredited as an approved technique, would it?"

Once Debbie O'Brien (now Jones) was on a breakaway training course when she was being shown a technique to disengage from a front strangle. Realising the limitation of the technique Debbie said to the course trainer "I've got concerns as to whether this technique would actually work if someone taller, heavier or stronger was really intent on strangling a smaller woman like me." To which the course trainer replied "Don't worry, when your attacked you will produce adrenaline that will increase your strength. That will make it work even against someone stronger than you." What he failed to acknowledge was that very possibly the attacker would also be in a state of emotional arousal whereby they may be producing adrenaline also, thus making them stronger to???

Monet was diagnosed with cataracts in 1912 but did not have surgery until 1923. He died three years later. He destroyed many paintings created when his vision was at its worst, although he had done this before his eye problems.

In essence, once Monet really saw what he had painted he released that what he thought he was seeing was not actually what he saw.

How many of us only see the distorted perception provided for us by others, yet fail to question what we are being told because we believe that the person training us must know what they are talking about?

How many of us distort and delete the truth to make what is being imposed upon us work - and then carry the can for I when it fails, or worse still, be blamed for 'not being able to do it properly' when all the time it was actually what we were being taught that didn't work. Yet we possibly, deep in the recess of our knowledge base, knew it wouldn't work but fooled ourselves into believing it would because someone in authority (an expert) said it would?

As Richard Bandler, one of the founders of NLP, keeps saying:

"If you don't run your own brain for your own benefit others will gladly run it for you for their benefit."

Time to open your eyes and your mind to the real possibilities that actually exist outside of the limits you impose on your self or that you allow others to impose upon you.

As a famous philosopher once said:

"If you give a man fish for food today, he will need feeding again tomorrow. If you teach him to fish he will have food for life."

Let us teach you not only how to teach but more importantly how to run and feed your own brain with the right kind of brain food!!!

Instructor Training

Our Restraint Instructors Qualifying Course has been legally audited by a Barrister at Law who was also awarded the CBE. In addition we have one of the most prominent Human Rights Lawyers on dvd that we use as part of our instructional material, and we have possibly produced the only specific book in Europe on Reasonable Force.

The course has also been subject to a full Health and Safety review and is underpinned and supported by thorough risk assessments methodology, making it possibly one of the most legally accurate courses in existence.

In addition to that, not only do you gain Instructor Accreditation and Certification, you also gain a BTEC Level 3 Advanced Award Certificate in Physical Restraint Practice. In addition to that you are also entitled to apply for a National Governing Body Level 2 Coaching Award and £5 million of instructor indemnity insurance specific to Physical Restraint should you wish to do so.

Currently the September course is now full, due to a huge demand for the qualifications we offer and the high standard of training we deliver.

As a result we have added additional dates this year between the 15th-19th October to run another Instructors Qualifying Course.

We can invoice you or you can spread the cost of your payments by credit card online or by direct debit if you wish to.

So, are you considering failing to attend?????? - If so why not be pro-active and find out what it is that you may miss out on by not being there..Be better than the rest!!

Next Instructors Qualifying Course is 15th - 19th October - 99% of 'Yes men' (and women) need not apply.
